Matthew Wilson
Bio
Matthew Wilson (b. 1997) is a visual artist currently living and working between NI and Cornwall. Centred around intimate material processes, the work develops a unique methodology responding to site specificity using slow and sustainable approaches. An intertwining of personal and cultural narratives utilises storytelling to open dialogue between past, present and future. The works come to fruition through a variety of traditional and unconventional methods, working across mediums in response to the needs of the work.
Following his graduation from BA Hons Fine Art at the Belfast School of Art in 2020, he was appointed Artist in Residence within the Fine Art department for the 2020/21 academic year.
He continues to supplement his education through alternative modes of learning such as workshops with local craftspeople and residencies, including a scholarship to study at the New York Academy of Art. He has been fortunate to receive funding from Arts Council Northern Ireland and other funding bodies. Alongside a personal practice, he continues to develop a number of commissioned projects within the community. Working with educational institutions such as Ulster University and Queens University, local community groups and government Council bodies to deliver workshops and legacy projects. In particular, he continues to advocate and facilitate the arts within rural contexts.
He is a current recipient of the Freelands Foundation Studio Fellowship based at Falmouth University 2025/26 - developing a new body of work whilst exploring the symbiotic relationship between teaching, research and making.
As an enthusiastic member of NI's artistic community, Wilson has been fortunate to continue exhibiting on both a local and and international level. For a full list of relevant projects, please find CV below.
